Research goal: Saving fuel through C2X communications
Maximizing the fuel efficiency of cars is not only a matter of engine and powertrain design. A group of companies and research institutions has launched a project that aims to unlocking the potential of data communications between hybrid vehicles and the infrastructure to optimize driving strategies. The desired result: Less fuel consumption, less emissions, better traffic flow.

The goal of the project HyNets is bundling several topic areas that hitherto have been regarded as separate and independent of each other: The automated exchange of information among cars as well as between cars and the infrastructure can make a contribution to lower fuel consumption by enabling a proactive energy management, innovative autonomous driving functions and, in particular, the collaboration between communicating cars in new traffic scenarios. The project is carried out by automotive tier one Denso, the universities of Aachen and Paderborn and the automotive development tool vendor dSpace. Besides optimising fuel consumption and traffic flow, the researchers also hope to gain insights and data material that would enable developers of future car generations to design the powertrains according to real needs.


To investigate the complex interplay of real hardware and software in hybrid powertrains with complex traffic scenarios, Denso will create an advanced hybrid drive prototype. This powertrain will then be installed in the test stand of the RWTH Aachen University. There, it will be connected to a powerful simulator that mimics the traffic environment as well as the entire vehicle and infrastructure communication processes. The traffic simulator is a contribution of dSpace while the Paderborn university will provide the communication simulation. The entire test setup will enable the researchers to put the hybrid powertrain through its paces in complex virtual driving scenarios.


“HyNet allows us for the first time to measure the direct effect of future connected driving scenarios to a real hybrid drive. Likewise it enables us to assess comprehensively the interaction between powertrain an the ambient in terms of energy consumption and traffic flow”, explains Ulrich Schwarz, Senior Manager EV/HV at Denso.
