The STNRGPF12, suitable for applications up to 600W and above, increases efficiency and reliability in a wide range of applications from industrial motor controls to charging stations, uninterruptible power supplies, 4G and 5G base stations, welding equipment, telecommunications exchanges, home appliances and data center power supplies.
The PFC controller operates in non-continuous mode with fixed switching frequency and average current mode control. The inner and outer control loops of the STNRGPF12 combine the best features of the digital and analog worlds. The inner control loop uses a hardware analog PI (proportional integral) compensator, while the outer voltage control loop is implemented with a digital PI controller that scores with fast dynamic response. This allows the STNRGPF12 to provide cascaded voltage and current regulation to control the output voltage based on the average total current in the coil.
Features of the IC include digital inrush current limiting, based on SCRs (Silicon Controlled Rectifiers) in the high-level switching structures to simplify soft start management and improve system robustness. The STNRGPF12 also supports disturbance feedforward, current compensation, phase shedding and fan control. A UART interface provides access to non-volatile memory so that PFC parameters can be tuned by the user to specific application requirements and parameters can be monitored in the field.
