New Comcast advanced Wi-Fi router could be smart-home hub
Internet and cable service provider Comcast (Philadelphia, PA) has released its latest router, which features a number of smart home capabilities.

According to the company, it designed the The xFi Advanced Gateway with the goal of creating "the fastest, smartest and most powerful Wi-Fi device on the planet." The device supports Gigabit Wi-Fi speeds and can also connect devices using smart home standards like ZigBee and Bluetooth Low-Energy (LE).

The xFi Advanced Gateway features a 160-MHz-capable 8x8 antenna array - claimed as the biggest array available on any home router or gateway. The antennas are capable of using the widest bandwidth channels currently available – 160 MHz – compared to between 20 and 80 MHz for most other currently available Wi-Fi routers and gateways.

Mu-MiMo (multi-user, multi-input, multi-output) technology enables the device to simultaneously power dozens of devices without sacrificing performance on any of them. The xFi Advanced Gateway's Internet of Things (IoT) radios - which include Bluetooth LE, ZigBee, and Thread - enable it to connect to virtually any IoT device, meaning smart home devices can use the new router as a hub, the company says.

The company currently offers a smart home security and automation service - Xfinity Home - which has almost 1.8 million subscribers. The xFi Advanced Gateway could enhance and expand the current smart home offering, suggests Business Insider , as well as allow the company to potentially get into the market for consumer-grade self-installed smart home devices by introducing support and management services for such devices.

The xFi Advanced Gateway is available across the country in every market where Comcast offers its Xfinity Gigabit Internet service. The company is also planning to introduce a Wi-Fi mesh option to expand in-home coverage later this month.
