NEC joins 5G Autonomous Cars for cross-borders digital corridors research
The focus of the project is designing and developing a 5G digital corridor for the cooperative, connected and automated mobility (CCAM) of the future on European roads. 5G technologies will be deployed along selected stretches of a motorway through the “Munich-Bologna corridor“, which covers 600 km of roads across three countries: Italy, Austria and Germany. This is one of the most important corridors identified by the European Union for an initiative to improve the mobility of people and goods throughout Europe.
Many technical challenges will be addressed through innovative technologies allowing cars to be connected to each other and to land structures for a better management of vehicle traffic. Special attention will be paid to security, advanced management of emergencies, traffic sustainability, and environment protection aspects.
“NEC Laboratories Europe will lead the cooperative, connected and automated mobility (CCAM) efforts within the 5G-CARMEN project,” said Dr. Xavier Costa, Deputy General Manager at NEC Laboratories Europe. “Main focus will be on developing a service-oriented, federated, and secure platform for CCAM.”
The key driver for this effort will be novel 5G technology, allowing current 4G mobile radio networks to evolve in order to obtain a better response to the needs of services in terms of speed of data exchanged and response times of the network infrastructure for the implementation of next-generation connected, cooperative and automated vehicles. A collaborative network of cross-border corridors between European countries will enable an environment for the testing and deployment of 5G technology. Thanks to these 5G corridors, Europe is currently the biggest experimental area in 5G technology for connected car field trials.
A consortium of 25 relevant industrial, academic and research organizations will cooperate on the project comprising major automotive (BMW, Fiat Chrysler, Autostrada del Brennero) and telecom stakeholders (Deutsche Telekom, Telecom Italia, T-Mobile, NEC Laboratories Europe, Nokia and Qualcomm)
The 5G-CARMEN projec kicked off on November 21st in Innsbruck Austria and will last 3 years.
