Marvell takes Escrypt's cyber security inside an in-car ethernet chip
Cyber security service provider Escrypt and the network chip manufacturer Marvell have developed a joint solution for secure Ethernet-based onboard communication in vehicles. The Marvell 88Q5050 Automotive Secure Switch integrates Escrypt’s CycurGATE firewall and the attack detection system. Customers in the automotive sector benefit from significantly improved end-to-end security.

The Marvell 88Q5050 is an Automotive Ethernet Gigabit Switch with special IT security features designed to prevent manipulative access to vehicle data traffic. Using Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) and Trusted Boot functionality, the switch increases the IT security of automotive Ethernet networks. It also supports black and white listing on all Ethernet ports.

As an integrated component of the switch, Escrypt’s Automotive Firewall CycurGATE supports a broad spectrum of filter mechanisms such as Stateless Packet Inspection, Dynamic Stateful Inspection and Deep Packet Inspection. The entire packet flow is centrally monitored and managed without interfering with the host controller of the individual ECUs. According to the vendor, the firewall supports all common routing methods and can be used on the switch as a library or stand-alone solution. In addition, CycurGATE uses hardware acceleration on the switch. Switch hardware and software are algorithmically tightly interwoven, so the firewall processes most data packets at wirespeed.

In addition, the Marvell 88Q5050 Ethernet Switch is also available with Escrypt's integrated attack detection system. The embedded intrusion detection system monitors in-vehicle communications directly in the switch and detects anomalies, typical attack signatures and misuse of diagnostic requests.

As a pioneer in the field of Ethernet technology, Marvell is thus seeking to meet the demands of the automotive industry for robust, future-proof in-vehicle networks, taking into account important parameters such as high bandwidths and low latencies as well as safety and security requirements.

According to a spokesman for Escrypt, the product is already being used in vehicle series production. However, the spokesman did not want to disclose the name(s) of the respective OEM(s).
