Hyundai joins automotive open-source software group
“Hyundai has been active in open source for years and its experience will benefit the entire AGL community,” said Dan Cauchy, Executive Director of Automotive Grade Linux at the Linux Foundation.
AGL is an open source project of the Linux Foundation. Its members intend to change the way automakers develop software. More than 140 members are working together on a common platform that is intended to serve as a de facto industry standard. The introduction of an open platform across the industry will allow automotive manufacturers and suppliers to share and reuse the same code base. According to the organization, this reduces development costs, shortens time-to-market for new products and reduces fragmentation within the industry.
“Open collaboration is essential if we are to realize the vision of networked vehicles,” said Paul Choo, Vice President and Head of Infotainment Technology Center at Hyundai Motor Company. “AGL has built a robust platform. It provides the flexibility to design and build new services and bring them to market quickly.”
The AGL Unified Code Base (UCB) platform was born from the collaboration of dozens of member companies and is an open source software platform for infotainment, telematics and combi applications. It follows the principle that developers develop a product once, which can then be used by several car manufacturers. The Unified Code Base represents 70% of the starting point for a development project and includes an operating system, middleware and application framework. Automobile manufacturers and suppliers can adapt the platform to their individual product and customer needs with functions, services and branding.
