EV front grill cover generates artificial engine sound
Electric cars need a sound generator so that passers-by can perceive the completely silently approaching vehicle. Most manufacturers use electronic systems with loudspeakers to generate the sound. The automotive supplier Hyundai Mobis is taking a different, unique approach: the company uses the cover on the front of the vehicle as sound converter.

In contrast to vehicles equipped with combustion engines, whose radiator grille is provided with holes to let the air flow in, the front of an electric vehicle is completely closed. Hyundai Mobis lets the cover itself become part of the speakers. Compared to conventional solutions, this means a simpler construction with significantly fewer components, lower weight and a space saving of two thirds.

Acoustic Vehicle Alert Sound (AVAS) is a loudspeaker system that produces sound outside the vehicle, alerting passers-by to approaching electric vehicles that make virtually no noise. It differs from ASD, a system that creates artificial engine sounds inside the vehicle for greater driving pleasure (for those who drive the car).

The Hyundai Mobis system moves loudspeaker of the existing product inside the vehicle, at the rear of the car’s front cover. Instead of the usual speaker membrane, the cover itself is used as a sound converter. According to the manufacturer, this system is very energy efficient. In addition to the artificial engine noise, the AVAS also generates other functional noises such as indicators and charge status signals and emits these to the environment via the “grille loudspeaker". The system should also be able to be used as a loudspeaker for outdoor activities such as camping.

In hybrid vehicles that have both an electric motor and a combustion engine (and thus also a normal radiator grille), the actuator is attached to the rear of the front bumper, which produces the same effect. Hyundai Mobis has patented the system.
