Daimler starts construction of battery factory in USA
With the ground-breaking ceremony for the construction of a battery factory in Tuscaloosa (Alabama, USA), the vehicle manufacturer Daimler has started its race to catch up in the future market for battery electric cars. The factory will soon supply the batteries for the future SUVs of Daimler's EQ technology brand.

According to Daimler board member Markus Schäfer, the carmaker plans to invest around one billion US dollars in the Tuscaloosa site. The company also operates a production line for cars there. The largest part of this sum is to be invested in the construction of the battery factory and in the expansion of the production plant for the planned electric SUVs. Once completed, the company's battery production network will comprise eight factories worldwide; the electric vehicles of the EQ family will roll off the assembly line at six locations. Daimler's electric initiative will create over 600 jobs in Alabama.

The battery factory is part of the global battery production network with a total of eight factories in Kamenz, Stuttgart-Untertürkheim, Sindelfingen, Beijing, Bangkok and now Tuscaloosa. The individual locations supply the local vehicle production and are ready for export if necessary. By 2022 Mercedes-Benz Cars will offer at least one electrified model in each series, with a total of more than 130 models in the portfolio. Mercedes Benz will also start production of all-electric SUV models in the USA as part of the worldwide electric initiative.
