Currently, Continental is testing its new service (“eHorizon.Weather”) with more than 200 vehicles in France. With this connected fleet, the company is creating an open test field to fathom out further apps for connected vehicles under real world condition. One of the goals is to investigate the conditions for predictive maintenance.

The eHorizon.Weather technology is utilizing the existing electric and electronic infrastructure of the car to gather information. Among others, the application uses the windscreen wiper status, fog lights, Anti-locking brakes and ESP to distill insights about temperature, air pressure, visibility and road conditions. Through telematics units in the vehicles, these data are uploaded to Continental’s cloud platform and then processed by Météo-France which merges them into the large-scape weather pattern and the road map and sends them back to the driver.

This process creates a swarm intelligence that can significantly increase the quality of short-term (up to three hours) weather forecast data, Continental claims. Through big data analysis, it also potentially enables the meteorology partner to develop innovative early warning methods.
