Carmakers, tech players publish safety rules for automated driving
Eleven leading companies from the automotive industry and the automated driving sector have published a joint document on Safety by Design for automated vehicles on SAE levels 3 and 4. The paper, called "Safety First for Automated Driving" (SaFAD), provides the framework for the development, testing and validation of safe, automated passenger vehicles.

These 11 leading companies are: Aptiv, Audi, Baidu, BMW, Continental, Daimler, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, HERE, Infineon, Intel and Volkswagen. They represent a wide range of the industry, and today have published the most comprehensive report yet on the development, testing and operation of safe automated vehicles.

The aim of the SaFAD white paper is to emphasize how important "safety by design" together with verification and validation is when it comes to creating a standard for automated driving as an industry.

For the first time SaFAD offers developers and operators of automated vehicles a system of clear traceability, from the basic requirement "safer than the average driver" to the components used in the vehicle and backend, such as cameras or steering systems. For the first time, it also presents a summary of the "safety by design", verification and validation methods of Level 3 and Level 4 according to SAE (J3016) automated vehicles.

The basis of the SaFAD white paper are the 12 basic principles, which further refine the capabilities of automated vehicles. The components in the vehicle and backend ("elements") that enable these "capabilitites" are networked by a generic architecture.

"Safety First for Automated Driving" combines the expertise of key companies by bringing together manufacturers, suppliers and companies in the tech sector with safety methods for the entire system of automated vehicles.

The interest in and development of technologies for automated driving has increased dramatically in recent years - driven by the goal of reducing the number of serious road accidents, optimizing traffic flow, and introducing new mobility concepts. This rapid growth brings a wide range of development methods from established companies and the growing number of new companies.

After the publication of "Safety First for Automated Driving," authors and experts from the participating partners will present the result of joint work at industry and tech conferences worldwide over the next few months.
