Battery production doubles at BMW US plant
BMW has invested $10m in a new battery assembly line and expanded the area to more than 8,000 square metres. Michael Nikolaides, Head of Motors and Electric Drives, BMW Group, explains that the company could double the number of batteries produced if the market demand doubles. In total, the plant’s battery assembly team has produced more than 45,000 batteries over the past four years.
In order to serve the growing electrified vehicle portfolio locally, the new assembly line can now produce various types of fourth-generation batteries. These are based on a new technology concept that makes them even more powerful.
More than 120 employees will be working in battery production at the Spartanburg plant by the end of the year. They have completed a comprehensive training program to acquire the technological skills required for battery production. The group currently operates three battery factories: At the BMW Group’s Dingolfing plant in Germany, the Spartanburg plant in the U.S. and the engine plant of the BMW Brilliance Automotive (BBA) joint venture. In addition, the BMW Group produces batteries for local automobile production together with a partner in Thailand. The BMW Group’s battery research and pilot plant are located at the company’s headquarters in Munich.
