There was no mention of profit, not much of business, but plenty of motherhood, apple pie and creating joy and happiness.

The two executives said that September 6, 2016 is a historic day but that it would be business as usual – only better.

Segars & Son went on to say that neither of them defined success by the number of chips shipped, the number of people connected with telephone service or revenues earned. This last one may be discomforting to holders of SoftBank shares who perhaps would like to see success measured in revenues, profits, an ascending share price and dividends.

But Segars & Son were by this time in full flow with a vision of harnessing what SoftBank calls the Information Revolution to contribute to people’s happiness and joy.

As one colleague of mine put it, “It sounds like they’ve changed their job and gone into politics.”

Not quite. The dynamic duo said ARM would remain committed to the roots of its past success including neutrality. ARM will remain an advanced engineering company but with a greater focus on R&D so that it can develop technology that “technology that invisibly enables opportunity for a globally-connected population.”

They concluded: “Whether it is advanced robotics, 5G networks, green data centers, supercomputers or intelligent connected devices, we can and will help to enable positive change. It is now our collective vision to realize an Information Revolution that brings happiness to everyone.”

If they can do that AND turn a profit then things will be good all round.

Or as singer, songwriter, rapper, and record producer Pharrell Williams sang: “Clap along if you feel like a room without a roof. Because I’m happy…”
