Personal air quality sensor monitors user’s environment

The Atmotube wearable air pollution sensor sends local air quality data to a user's smartphone in real time.

Launched as an IndieGogo campaign with almost $100,000 currently raised of a $52,000 goal, the Atmotube is a wearable multi-gas sensing device designed to monitor a user’s environment. According to the company, the Atmotube can accurately measure air pollution by detecting the presence of a wide range of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and harmful gases like carbon monoxide (CO), as well as temperature and humidity.

The tube-shaped device can be worn on a key chain or carried in a pocket. In conjunction with an iOS or Android smartphone, the Atmotube provides a user with an air quality index reading measuring from 0 to 100. The Atmotube will also crowdsource user data to create a network of air quality information in its mobile app and share the results on a global map.

The device weighs 1.4 ounces (40 grams) and features an LED to notify its user of the current air quality score: Red – "severely polluted," orange – "very polluted," yellow – "polluted," green – "moderate," and blue – "good." The Atmotube is expected to begin shipping by March 2016.
