Old fabs never die – Renesas reopens fab for 300mm silicon power

Renesas Electronics is reopening its Kofu Factory, located in Kai City, Yamanashi, Japan, to make silicon power devices on 300mm wafers.

The factory was closed in October 2014 as part of a reorganisation into Renesas Naka Semiconductor, but Renesas failed to find a buyer.

Renesas now intends to reopen the fab in 2024 with a Y90bn ($900m, E800m) investment as a 300-mm wafer fab capable of manufacturing IGBTs and power MOSFET power semiconductors. The 18,000m2 will double the Renesas capacity for silicon power devices for electric vehicles.

“This investment enables us to have our largest wafer fabrication line dedicated to power semiconductors, which are key to realizing decarbonization,” said Hidetoshi Shibata, President and CEO of Renesas. “We will continue to conduct necessary investments to enhance our in-house production capability while further strengthening ties with outsource partners. To address the mid to longer term demand growth, Renesas remains committed to ensuring security of supply in order to provide our customers with the best possible support.”

The opening is consistent with the 24 month lead time for semiconductor processing equipment
