InvenSense licenses sensor positioning tech to Huawei
The Kirin 950 was designed by Huawei’s semiconductor subsidiary HiSilicon Technologies Co. Ltd. for implementation in TSMC’s 16nm FinFET manufacturing process technology. It includes four Cortex-A72 cores running at up to 2.3GHz and four Cortex-A53 cores that run at 1.8GHz as well as an "always-on" i5 sensor coprocessor. It also has a Category-6 LTE modem and graphics processing in the form of a Mali T880 GPU.
The recently launched Mate-8 smartphone from Huawei is the first mobile phone to include the HiSilicon Kirin 850 and the InvenSense Positioning Library, InvenSense said. IPL uses sensor data from the mobile device gyroscope, accelerometer, magnetometer and barometric pressure sensors to generate an inertial navigation system (INS) that tracks the position change of a vehicle or pedestrian.
Such systems can work in the absence of a GPS signal but errors build up over time and systems have had a poor reputation (see Has indoor navigation lost its way?). InvenSense said it will collaborate with HiSilicon to improve the software library.
