Compact 2G/3G cellular modem targets IoT applications

Swiss manufacturer u-blox has introduced what it claims to be the smallest cellular module that supports both 2G and 3G connectivity. The SARA-U201measures just 16 x 26 x 3 mm and contains the latest 3G chipset for M2M / IoT applications.

Providing 5-band UMTS, quad-band GSM, and having global radio regulatory approvals, the voice and data capable SARA-U201 is designed for a wide range of industrial, automotive telematics, and consumer applications that must be able to operate on any 2G or 3G network in the world.

Pin-to-pin and form factor compatible with its 2G counterpart SARA-G350, the new SARA-U201 includes UART and USB data communication interfaces and can be seamlessly combined with GNSS modules and chips, thanks to its pre-integrated AssistNow client. With its support for 2G and 3G networks, the product is ideal for applications that must be capable to operate on both types of networks. In addition, it simplifies inventory management for companies manufacturing products that make use of the SARA-U201, argues Stefano Moioli, Director Product Management Cellular at u-blox.

The SARA-U2 modules are manufactured in ISO/TS 16949 certified sites and also meet the internationally recognized ISO 16750 specification that stipulates environmental and electrical testing criteria when used in road vehicles.
