The contract, valued at $15 million, is, says the company, the largest smart waste bin deployment in global history. The project is set to ultimately deploy about 4,000 solar-powered smart trash receptacles across the city.

“The cans come with Wi-Fi,” says Jeffrey Raymond, chief communications spokesman for the Baltimore Department of Public Works. “We will utilize this capability to allow the can to transmit information including how full it is so we can offer as-needed servicing of the cans.”

Ecube’s CleanCUBE trash compactors hold up to eight times more waste than non-compacting bins, reducing collection frequency by up to 80%, the company says. The compactors wirelessly communicate information they collect in real time through Ecube’s CleanCityNetworks cloud-based monitoring and data analytics platform.

“We are very pleased to receive the contract from the City of Baltimore,” says Michael Son, Chief Financial Officer of Ecube Labs. “We strongly believe that Ecube Labs’ technology will increase the city’s waste collection efficiency tremendously, as one CleanCUBE is just as effective as six traditional trash receptacles that are already out on Baltimore’s streets.”

The first phase of the project – installing 150 smart bins in the South Baltimore Gateway/Casino area – is set to take place during the first quarter of 2018. The second phase, planned for the second half of 2018, will introduce double the units, with deployments planned in the city’s business districts and at bus stops.
