Sigfox, PNI Sensor partner on smart parking in the U.S.

Low-power wide-area-network (LPWAN) connectivity provider Sigfox U.S.A. (Boston, MA), has partnered with magnetic sensor and sensor fusion technology company PNI Sensor (Santa Rosa, CA) to launch an IoT-enabled parking solution in the US.

The Sigfox-enabled PlacePod is an IoT-enabled smart parking sensor for on-street and off-street municipal and private parking management. It is offered as solving the most mission-critical aspects of parking management, including accurate, real-time vehicle detection and location of available parking spaces.

PlacePod detects parking events in dense urban environments and filters out magnetic interference from underground trains, passing traffic, and overhead power lines, which can trigger false parking events. Using Sigfox device-to-cloud technology, the Sigfox-enabled PlacePod, say the companies, has an extremely long battery life, allowing for smart cities, universities, parking companies, and facilities to harness the benefits of PlacePod and make data-driven decisions over long periods of time.

As a result, parking managers and city planners can use the Sigfox-enabled Placepod solution to help reduce traffic congestion and carbon emissions, improve urban mobility, and increase parking revenue by making parking enforcement more efficient. Sigfox is demoing the PlacePod at this year's IoT World event in Santa Clara on May 14 -17, 2018.
