The IO-Link Community has completed the specification work for IO-Link Wireless and will publish an approved version at the Hanover Fair 2018 later this month. At the PI joint booth in Hanover (Hall 9, D68), IO-Link Wireless technology will be presented to the general public for the first time in the form of a demonstrator.
IO-Link Wireless defines wireless communication between sensors/actuators and controllers (PLC) in the field of industrial automation. Performance, functionality and performance are said to be comparable to wired solutions.
IO-Link Wireless offers real-time latency times of 5 ms for communication with up to 40 sensors or actuators. Reliability is better than a packet error rate (PER) of 10-9. For comparison: other comparable wireless standards - such as Wifi, Bluetooth or Zigbee - are around 10-3. IO-Link Wireless supports roaming functions and the ability to operate battery-powered or energy-harvesting sensors with low power consumption in a real-time network. One of the key features of IO-Link Wireless is its compatibility with industrial and process automation protocols. Planning, commissioning, operation and maintenance can be done using standard IO-Link tools. This guarantees backwards compatibility with wired IO-Link systems.
In parallel to the specification work, the IO-Link Wireless working group defines the necessary test specifications and test scenarios that are required when the first suppliers develop their components for the new system. The IO-Link Community is also planning to organize a developer workshop at the Hamburg University (HSU) June 2018 to enable interested device manufacturers to quickly and easily develop IO-Link wireless components.
